Victorian Mini Hat Tutorial

You'll Need:

It's difficult when english is not your first language, I hope you will understand anyways. :)

Decadent Victorian Mini Hat Black Dot

Here's a picture of the mighty fine hat. :) I used it as a present and it was very well received , yay.

A picture of what I used for the hat in a big messy pile.

First I took the duct tape (it is round, and a nice size for a shade - depending on how much of it you've already used), and drew a circle on the cardborad (in this case - a pizza box).

Then I cut the toilet paper roll in half with a hobby knife - also a decent size for the hat.

See how perfectly they fit. :)

I covered them in duct tape, since I wouldn't want my mini hat to deteriorate in rainy weather, so now it should hold off about anything. If not, then I haven't used enough duct tape. ;P

I glued the top to the shade piece with a glue gun, but it can also be done with the duct tape. It'll hold fine.

Now measure from top middle, to the connection point between top and shade. Here it's 7 cm. (then you know what I'm talking about, ;P)

Take a piece of paper, and fold it a couple of times, as shown, and draw a line, so it will become a circle with a radius of 7,5 cm.(0,5-1 cm bigger than the measurement you just made). Or use a compass.

Take the paper circle and copy it to the fabric of your choice. And of course, cut it out.

Now measure from the connection point of the top and the shade to the bottom middle. In this case it is 8,5 cm. (not visible).

Again draw a circle either with a compass, or as shown, with a radius of 9 cm (0,5-1 cm bigger than the measurement of the part described above.

To find the middle of the fabric, it's easy to just fold it twice.

To find the middle of the bottom part of the hat, you just draw a couple of lines across, then you get a feeling of where the middle is.Then you measure from the middle to the edge. Here it's 5 cm.

When you've found the middle of the bottom part fabric piece, you want to draw another circle, which has a radius that is 0.5 cm smaller than the radius of the bottom part of the hat (the shade you just measured above). Draw it on the right side, because you'll be sewing after it and cover it with lace.

Now wrinkle some lace. It should fit the circle you've just made. Either use a ruffler-foot for the sewing machine, or do like in Wrinkle Fabric Basic.

Now sew the lace on, where you drew the circle, on the bottom piece of fabric.

It should look like this.

Then sew in your hand, stitches around the edge with a very strong thread - about 0,5 from the edge. Do not start with a knot, just leave a long line, that you can pick up, when you come all the way around.

Then put the bottom fabric part around the bottom of the hat.
It's not shown here, but it's best if you glue the bottom part to the fabric, then it will be more stable - I've used textile glue for that in a later similar project.
Tighten the thread, and tie a couple of knots. Make sure it holds.

Here's a close up. :)

Now sew again at the edge of the other piece of fabric - the top piece. Just as you did with the bottom piece.

And wrap that around the top, as shown. Tie a good couple of knots, and twist the thread around the hat and tie some more knots. Just to make sure it holds.

Now glue on or sew on the feathers (or other ornaments of your taste) with a glue gun.

Then add the ribbon. I've glued it on - it's just so much easier and quicker. :)

Here's the hair clip I've used. As you can see, it has a flat side, where I can glue it onto the hat.

And that I have done, as the last thing. As you can see, the fabric is a bit loose here, so it would be better to glue the fabric onto the bottom part of the hat, before you close it, as I described before.

Now it's done, and you have a pretty mini hat, yay! :)

"I used this tutorial and it was great! I now have a gorgeous little top hat and intend to make many more. The measurements were a little tricky for me, but I managed to tie everything together nicely. I sewed by hand, you don't really need a machine =)

thanks a lot!"
