Really Simple Bolero Tutorial

You'll Need:

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #1 Black Dot

A bolero is a small vest'y thing, that can be really nice if it's a bit chilly. I think it's nice to have when it's winter - especially this one, because it's so simple and really comfortable.

I do admit it isn't very goth, this particular one ,but it's because I didn't have some black fleece at the moment, so I just went with what I had. ;P Hope you don't mind, my dear stitchlings.

It's made out of a T-shape and is pretty square to look at, when you're not wearing it, but that changes when you put it on. It wraps neatly around you and creates a nice looking collar. That's why I like putting on some edging of some sort to give it some contrast. :)

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #2

As you can see on this picture, it already seems pretty easy, don't you think?

A sqaure piece of fabric: 105 cm x 60 cm. (If you're a bit bigger you can add to the width, or if you're smaller, subtract from the width). This can be anything stretchy. Knitted fabric or fleece is good. I've used fleece here. Some bias binding, a tape measurer and a pair of scissors.

What you also need, which you cannot see here is a sewing machine and some pins.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #3

First off, fold your piece, so you have a piece that measures 105 cm x 30 cm. From the sides measure 32 cm and mark it up (add to this number if you're bigger and subtract if you're smaller).

Then you cut off a square like this: Cut where you've folded, until you reach your markings (32 cm), and then you cut along your markings - here it's shown with pins.

You should get a T-shaped piece like this.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #5

If you've unfold the fabric to make sure you had a T, then fold it again - like shown on the picture.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #6

Now fold in the 'arms' so they connect with the folded T-bottom.

Pin them together as shown.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #7

Now sew where you've pinned. Use a seam allowance of 0,5 cm. That should be enough.

hNow your bolero is basically done.

The next thing I'll do is to add bias tape to the edge. I think it makes a nice detail.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #8

Take your bias tape and pin it on right side against right side. Sew it on, starting 1-2 cm from the end of the bias tape. This is to prevent a raw edge when you're done.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #9

Here you can see what I mean. I've folded the end in, before I sew the other end on top of the folded end. Just sew 1-2 cm on top, and cut the rest of the bias tape off.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #10

Here's shown how neatly your raw edge will be tucked away, when you sew the other side.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #11

Fold your bias tape onto the back, and sew on top of your seam. This will conceal you stitching, and it'll look really pretty. :) Just make sure to get the bias tape on the backside.

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #12

And you're done.
If you have a name tag or something, you can sew it on now.

You can see the two seams - that'll be the back sides.

I've put a 'BeMyGoth.com' name tag on and it's for sale at the new Etsy shop. ;P (today is 25th of February 2011)

Really Simple Bolero Tutorial #14

Here's how it looks from the back.

It's really simple and really easy to make, don't you think? :)

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial. Don't forget to leave feedback if you have any.

"I made this in satin, and just made sure it was roomy enough without the stretch of a knit fabric. I made a facing for the shawl collar, since my fabric's wrong side was so different from the right side, and sewed it along the collar edge and into the seams by the armscyes (before adding the bias tape). It turned out so well that I might make another one in a different fabric, and experiment even more. Thanks for the tutorial!"

"Thank you Louloubel. :)
I'm glad you like it.

The T-shape comes when you cut 2 squares away in each corner, so to speak, and they should measure 30 cm x 32 cm.

The way I've done it, is by folding the fabric in half, lengthwise, and measure 32 cm from the sides toward the middle. Mark it, and then cut off the square.
You can see on the third picture, that there are needles, and the fabric is folded. Cut where the needles are and in the fold. Just don't cit both layers of fabric. :)
I hope I explain it okay - it's a bit hard when you can't show it. :D
Just write again if you have more questions. :)"

"Too bad with the sewing machines... then it's nice to have projects which don't need too much sewing, eh? ;)
It's really nices to know when the tutorials are being tested out in the real world. :)
I'm really glad you could use it. :)"

"I actually just made this (although I had to hand sew-the curse of having two broken sewing machines) and I wear it ALL the time! I made it in red and it was so quick:) Thanx for another great tutorial!"
