Indie Goth Skirt Tutorial

You'll Need:

Indie Goth Skirt Finished Black Dot

Skirts are pretty much basic necessities in your closet, so here's a simple skirt for you to make in about an hour, before you head out to a cool gig, or something similar. ;P

A picture of what you need for this. Choose some fabric you really like, or sew scraps together to create a more grungy feel.

Cut the fabric. Use the whole width of the fabric as length and make one piece which is 33 cm wide (30 plus 2 cm seam allowance at the top, and 1 cm seam allowance at the bottom). This piece is the top skirt part, where you'll have the elastic band and waist ribbon.

Cut double length of your other piece, but now only 22 cm wide (20 cm with 1 cm seam allowance both at the top and at the bottom.)

I know that my fabric is pretty wrinkly here - I just got burnt on my hand by my iron, so I'm keeping a little distance... morale: Don't burn your hand on the iron.. ;P

Take the 33 cm wide fabric and sew it together at the short sides. Overlock or zigzag the edge and one of the long sides as well. This will be your top part of the skirt.

Here you can see which parts have been overlocked. It's done, so that it won't fringe, because it won't be hidden in any seams.

Now find the front center. I've done it by deciding that the seam should be at the left side, and then folded the fabric twice. Then you have the front center at the last fold. I've put two pins, where I want the ribbon holes to be. - Where I would like to tie my waist ribbon. You can do it wherever you like though. ;P

I've sewn two small button holes, because that was the easiest. And as you can see, it's not right by the top edge, otherwise the holes would be on the inside of your skirt.

Now fold the top edge and pin it down. You have 2 cm of seam allowance, and that's how much you should use then. :) Sew it approximately 1,5 - 1,7 cm from the edge, and you have a nice casing for your elastic band and ribbon.

Leave a small gap open, so you can put in the elastic band later.

Now take the other two pieces of fabric and sew one of the short sides together. Overlock or zigzag as you did with the top skirt - but this time it'll be the bottom part.

Fold the bottom part inwards and sew on the lace ribbon as you fold it.

Now you should have a nice long piece of fabric with a lace edging. ( This can be left out if you don't like lace. I just like lace very much, ^^.

Now the tedious part. You ruffle the "raw" side of the fabric now. I've done it with a 'ruffler', which makes it tons easier, but we have a tutorial for ruffling fabric here: Wrinkle Fabric

I know this isn't the best picture, but what it's supposed to show is that you pin your ruffled fabric onto the raw part of the top skirt. Make it fit, so that you have some seam allowance, where the top skirts' seam is (so you can get a continuous seam).

Sew the side seam of the botton part. I've pinned it, so it would be easier to sew more precisely.

Cut the excess seam allowance and overlock or zigzag. On this picture you can see the continuous seam. :)

Sew the top and the bottom together, and you're almost done. :) Overlock or zigzag over the seams (it's for support and less fringing).

Three details left - first put in the elastic band of your choice. It's easily done with a safety pin - then you can just push it all the way around.

Indie Goth Skirt Picture 18

Sew the edges together really good, or tie a great knot (although I do not recommend this, because it'll be bulgy...)

Sew up the little gap, where you put your elastic band in.

Now put in your waist ribbon, just like with the elastic band, but through the button holes in the front (or wherever you put them).

Ta-Da! You're done!!!
