Dress-Like Apron Tutorial

Dress-Like Apron Tutorial #1 Black Dot

An apron is a must have for every baker or cook in every home. But not all aprons are as pretty or nice as we want them to be, and 'designer-aprons' can be expensive. So why not make your own apron. Then you'll be able to make a complete mess of the kitchen without messing up your fine clothes. ;P

I've included a 1 cm seam allowance in the measurement in the pattern!

First I want you to go down to the last picture in this tutorial, and cut out the pieces drawn. If you have less boobies than I have, you can make it less wide (the top part).

Here's a picture of the parts I've cut out.

We want to start out with wrinkling or ruffling the parts that are to be wrinkled. So get your stitch length and set it to 5 mm.

Sew two rows of stitches where the wrinkles are to be. DO NOT backstitch!! You have to pull the threads in a moment. Sew the first thread 0,7 cm from the edge and the other approximately 0.5 cm from the other thread.

When you're done - pull the threads untill you have the width you want - in this case for the boob-parts - 24 cm an 46 for the main apron part.

See? - they're nicely wrinkled up. :)

And now for a step I haven't taken pictures of - but please iron the sides of the boob-parts, so it'll be easier to sew them down. Like on this picture. Hope it's comprehensible. :)

Measuring the main apron part to 46 cm.

Now take your frill pieces. Sew the short sides together, so that you have one long piece. Sew one of the raw edges with zigzag or an overlocker. Wrinkle the other side of it like shown above, or use a ruffler like I have done if you have a such.

Sew it onto the apron-part. (not where you've wrinkled the main part, though.)

Here's how it's sewn on. (this is the worst pictorial ever... what have I been thinking, hehe - hope you'll understand it anyways)

Sew the two 'underbust pieces' together. Pin on the main apron part to in in the middle and the boobs parts too, like shown, and sew them on. Nearly done. :D

This picture shown the 'wrinkle thread' you can see from the wrinkle step. If you've used the mentioned 1 cm seam allowance, it'll show on the front, and since you've sewn the pieces together, there's no need for it anymore. You can pull it out now.

Now pin the long 'underbust piece' and iron the 1 cm seam allowance on all the raw edges down, so it's easier to sew. And sew a stitch all the way through. (my english is bad today, so don't hesitate to ask in the comments below - I'll do my best to explain. :P)

And done! I'm now proudly presenting my new apron. Altough I think I've made this one a bit too long. I think it would be prettier if it was just to the knee or something. Hence the suggetion in the pattern. ;P
